MarketWATCH Muskoka: 28 August 2019
Arts and crafts. The term relates to a design period of the late 19th and early 20th century. The ‘old Muskoka’ style is an offshoot – especially the shingle style cottages of that period. For some, that classic genre represents the Muskoka ideal: large porches or verandas, deep fireplaces and (if you’re a purist) dark wood tones.
Arts and crafts has another meaning for us. Occasionally we work with artists, crafts people and designers who think of home or cottage design as an extension of their craft. It’s as if they choose to live in the art they create. Some are very successful in building a three dimensional work of art and space for themselves most people would be comfortable with. Others less so.
The challenge with home design, unless money doesn’t matter, is nearly always compromise for the artists. Art is a very personal thing. Innovation and expression can create insight or foster discomfort. Unless an artist thinks in terms of market requirements, the pure art approach, the one that results in uniqueness, can be financially unrewarding.
There are two artist homes coming to market shortly. Both unique. Both artistic. One of them will undoubtedly strike a positive response from many who see it. It feels comfortable and peaceful. Serene comes to mind. The other will be a challenge. There’s so much to see, it overstimulates the senses. It’s like entering a 3 dimensional restless mind. Both creators are highly talented yet the expression of their art widely divergent. One will profit, the other may feel hurt by the outcome.
Fortunately for buyers, there’s choice. But if you’re building you’re making a permanent choice. For financial reasons, unless money doesn’t matter, make sure your innovative thought has an appreciative audience before proceeding. The ‘wouldn’t it be fun’ approach may not have legs.
This week, the last of summer before school, has new and interesting listings. Take a look! There may be some 3 dimensional art with your name on it…
