Change is definitely in the air and on the horizon. There’s something about fall air that’s different. It seems crisper, cleaner. It’s almost as if it’s been put though a filter.
Good thing, too! This is the time of year when the forest transitions from being a backdrop to becoming the main event. Almost daily we’re seeing the horizon change from being a deep green/blue to having tinges of gold at the top of the crown. Where the deep greens morph into more of a pastel shade. There’s an occasional flamboyance though, where some slumbering tree seems to say,”screw it” and throws off its green coat to flash brilliant red against the still dark background.
Going for a walk in the woods and along pathways where fallen leaves carpet the floor, the smell brings back childhood filled with leaf forts, jumping in piles and being buried to leap out and startle passersby.
The ships of Muskoka on Lake of Bays and the Big 3 regularly ply the waters that reflect these colourful changes and take people on cruises to see fall glory. It’s especially dramatic against a dark grey sky when a shaft of light breaks through and spots the shore opposite. Nature’s light show.
This coming weekend we pause to give thanks and recognize the bounty we share. Muskoka is dressed for the occasion. Come up and wonder at the glory of autumn in the near north.
