Muskoka MarketWATCH - Cottage Country Annual Market Report

Muskoka MarketWATCH - Cottage Country Annual Market Report

Cottage Country Marketplace The basic message? 2017 was a very strong year. For all segments of our marketplace record average prices were achieved. Most, but not every geography had record numbers of sales. All properties sold faster than in the last 3 years on average and at stronger percentages of ask. We have chosen to take a high-level perspective of the waterfront real estate market in the primary areas we serve. The numbers we have are general and indicative of trends across a large geography. Conditions change within geography, in fact, they even change by lake if you go to the detail of understanding the effects of exposure and view on sales. The Big 3 (Lakes ...Read More

MarketWATCH Muskoka - 20 December 2017

The new listing service, Matrix, is up and running. The change has had a few minor bumps. Largely though, the change has gone smoothly. Some of our subscribers have yet to log on to their new portals. That will create the biggest challenge because the links provided expire in about 10 days unless activated by logging on before then. Let us know if you need to have the link resent to you. Our real estate market has been pretty quiet, as you might expect. Muskoka has had record cold. There’s lots of snow and many smaller lakes already have closed over with ice. Friends of ours were commenting about sled tracks across their lake already. That sends shudders through us. There is NO WAY ic...Read More

MarketWATCH Muskoka - 15 November 2017

MarketWATCH Muskoka: 15 November 2017 Santa came to Bala last week and he’s coming to Port Carling this weekend, heading to Bracebridge on December 3rd, with Gravenhurst and Huntsville yet to be visited. Bala’s famed Trek to Bethlehem is in another couple of weeks. If you’ve never experienced it, take your children and grandchildren…it’s a wonderful way to give an historic perspective to Christmas. Muskoka is resonating with the sounds and sights of this magical time of year. The Christmas train is on its way… We haven’t experienced much lake effect snow yet. Forecasters think this is may be the year to remember lake effects. So far it’s b...Read More

MarketWATCH Muskoka - 18 October 2017

MarketWATCH Muskoka: 18 October 2017   Last week we talked about the Cranberry Festival. Saturday was a gift. The day was dry and warm. Sunday, on the other hand suited ducks and worms better. The festival is a marker that cottage season has changed. Today the sky is clear, the colours (what is left of the forest crown) are bright. Walk through the woods and the scurrying going on is amazing! Chipmunks are industriously storing nuts, acorns and maple keys. They usually tuck away enough for 3 winters (just in case). They talk a lot too. Sit and watch and these little guys are defensive of their territories in a way you might not imagine. They fairly ye...Read More

MarketWATCH Muskoka - 11 October 2017

Thanksgiving in midsummer? No, but it certainly felt that way! One of the best weekends Muskoka had to offer all year! Afternoons were glorious. Kids played outside, some of them in the water. Boats were out, some just drifting while the occupants soaked up the rays. Sunsets? Magnificent! Some of the best we’ve seen in years. It was certainly a memorable weekend – especially since some of us recall snow showers in the last 20 years. The Muskoka weather should continue too. Next weekend is Cranberry Festival in Bala. A great way to fete the little red berry that can add so much dash and colour to our festive occasions. Don’t overlook cranberry sausages, butter tarts...Read More

MarketWATCH Muskoka - 4 October 2017

MarketWATCH Muskoka: 4 October 2017 Here we are! Thanksgiving is upon us. Turkey time. Some cottagers are using this weekend as the time to get ready for winter, clearing the water lines, installing anti-freeze in reservoirs, putting bubblers in the water and weights on dock decks. Others we know are putting sand and salt barrels at strategic points in their lane ways. You never know when a hill needs to be sanded for winter use. At the time of writing, the day is sunny. Sky is clear and some of us are wearing shorts! Autumn this year has been a blessing! Here’s hoping it continues. There are a number of serious buyers making their way north over the next week and walking in the su...Read More

MarketWATCH Muskoka - 27 September 2017

This past week has been a gift. We spent more time on the water than we have all summer. Weather has been very cooperative. Balmy breezes, gentle waves and rising temperature of the lake has made being waterbound truly enjoyable. Very few boats too, although Monday evening found the lake to be busier than it was on the weekend. Looking across to the beaches, they were busy too with kids from after school. What a life! We know the weather’s about to change. It has to change. In the meantime, Muskoka is in its glory. Leaves are testing their fall colours, bugs have decided they’ve had enough and it’s warm! Summer in September. Nice.   As far as waterfront cottages go,...Read More

MarketWATCH Muskoka - 20 September 2017

MarketWATCH Muskoka: 20 September 2017 Summer and September this year are synonymous. Who would’ve thought? The lake is warm, as are the evenings. The days? Summer like. Many of us think September is THE BEST month in Muskoka. This year it’s even better! The Fall Studio Tour begins this weekend. Maybe this year it will be the first Summer Studio Tour. Regardless, the tour is always interesting, whether shopping for that special piece, thinking about Muskoka decorations for a festive table or just hoping to be inspired by something that catches your eye. The Tour is all of that and then some, carvings, metalwork, sculpture, paintings, fabrics …just about everything you co...Read More

MarketWATCH Muskoka - 13 September 2017

MarketWATCH Muskoka: 13 September 2017 September brings the Fall Studio Tour to Muskoka. We celebrate artists and artisans, people of creativity and talent who live and create here. Quite special to have so many gifted people so close. The Tour, which takes place in Spring and Fall is a real eye opener and definitely worth doing. September also brings us Spinning Reels. Some people proudly call it BIFF. If Toronto can have TIFF, why can’t Bracebridge have its own version? Every other Monday from September to May at the Norwood Theatre, independent and small films are shown. It’s a wonderful evening out. Depending on the popularity of the film, all three theatres may be mad...Read More

MarketWATCH Muskoka - 6 September 2017

Artist: A. Catherine O’Mara MarketWATCH Muskoka: 6 September 2017 If you listen to the news, you’d think summer is over. Not so. We are embarking on what many people think is the finest part of the season in Muskoka. September. With it comes warm, sunny days, cool nights, no bugs and a peacefulness on the water that is hard to find in high season. The water’s still warm, swimming’s a pleasure and so is just sitting on the dock, enjoying nature. September enhances Muskoka as leaves turn to their golden and rusty hues. Somehow the sky seems bluer, it’s definitely clearer and the reflection of the forest in the lake is brighter. September glows! September also br...Read More
